Surveys

Build multi-section surveys with conditional questions, award points for completion, and read the results in the admin or by CSV export.

Surveys let you ask your fans structured questions, award points by section, and branch the questionnaire so each fan only sees the questions that apply to them.

Surveys are only available on programs that have them enabled. If you don’t see the section in your menu, talk to your Fanmaker contact.

You’ll find it in the admin under Point Earning › Surveys

How a survey is put together

A survey has three levels, and each one does a different job.

The survey is the container. It carries the title, the window it runs in, and whether it’s enabled. Points aren’t set here.

Sections are the groups inside it. A survey always has at least one. If you open a survey that has none, one is created for you. Each section has its own title, its own Completion points, its own enabled switch, and optionally a prompt shown above the progress bar and a message shown when a fan finishes the section. Sections are how you break a long questionnaire into chapters, and they are where points are set.

Questions live inside sections. Each question has a type, some type-specific settings, and, for dropdowns and choice questions, a list of options.

Conditions hang off individual questions. A condition says “only show this question if the answer to that question looks like this.” They turn a flat list of questions into a questionnaire that adapts to the fan.

Everything you build lives on one page: the survey’s detail page has a section list down the left, and the selected section’s questions in the pane on the right.

Creating a survey

  1. Go to Point Earning › Surveys.

  2. Click New Survey.

  3. Fill in Title, Active From and Active Until.

  4. Click Create Survey.

Note: Active From and Active Until are both required. A survey won’t save without them.

You’ll land back on the survey list. Click View on your new survey to start building it.

The survey list

The list gives you filter buttons for All, Active, Upcoming and Expired, plus a search box for finding a survey by title.

Each row shows:

  1. Title

  2. Active Window — the dates the survey runs

  3. Points — the total of every section’s Completion points, which is the most a fan can earn from the survey

  4. Status — Active, Upcoming or Expired

  5. Public Link — click Open ↗ to see the live survey, which is handy for checking your work or sharing the URL

  6. Actions — View or Delete

Note: A survey that is turned off shows as Expired, even if its dates haven’t passed. A Points total of 0 means none of the survey’s sections pay anything.

Editing the survey itself

Open a survey and the top of the page gives you four tiles: Responses, Sections, Questions and Section Points. Section Points is the total of the points set on each section, and the tile reminds you “Set on each section.” Two cards follow.

Survey Details is read-only: title, active window, and whether the survey is Enabled or Disabled.

Edit Survey is where you change them: Title, Active From, Active Until, and an Enabled checkbox. Click Save Changes.

Note: The Enabled checkbox only appears once the survey exists. It isn’t on the create form. If you need a survey to sit dormant, create it and then turn Enabled off here.

Building sections

The Sections list on the left shows every section in the survey, with its question count. A section that’s switched off is marked Off. Click a section to load its questions into the right-hand pane.

To add one, click + Add at the top of the list. You’ll be asked for:

  • Title — required.

  • Completion prompt — optional. Shown to fans above the progress bar, for example “Finish this section to earn 100 points.”

  • Completion points — the points a fan earns for finishing this section.

  • Enabled — turn a section off to hide it.

Tip: Fans only earn points for sections that have a Completion points value. A survey has no points setting of its own.

To change an existing section, click Edit next to it in the list, or Edit Section in the section header. The edit form has everything from the add form plus one extra:

  • Section complete message — a rich-text message shown to the fan when they finish the section. You can type [[title]] for the section name and [[points]] for the points earned, and they fill in automatically.

You can delete a section from its header, but only when the survey has more than one. Deleting a section deletes all of its questions with it.

Adding questions

With a section selected, click + Add Question above the questions table.

Question types

  • Single-line text

  • Multi-line free text

  • Dropdown menu

  • Choice — buttons

  • Star rating

The form changes to match the type you pick, so you only see the settings that apply.

The fields

  • Question — the question text itself. Required.

  • Answer format (free-text types only) — Free, Date, Email, Number or Phone. This constrains what the fan can enter.

  • Description — optional rich text shown beneath the question.

  • Placeholder (free-text types only) — displayed in the input before the fan types anything.

  • Number of stars (star rating only) — 3, 5 or 10.

  • Options (dropdown and choice only) — click + Add option, type the option text, and repeat. Use Remove to drop one.

Then four checkboxes:

  • Enabled — whether the question is live.

  • Allow feedback — adds an optional comment box for the fan.

  • Show “Other” (dropdown and choice only) — adds an “Other…” choice the fan can type into.

  • Allow multiple (dropdown and choice only) — lets the fan pick more than one answer.

Ask again after — a number plus a unit (days, weeks, months or years), saved with each answer.

Click Add Question to save it. New questions are added to the end of the section. To change one later, use the Edit button on its row. The same form opens, filled with the current values.

The questions table

Each section’s questions are listed in order, showing the question text, its type, how many responses it has collected, how many condition rules it carries, and its actions: Edit, Conditions and Remove.

Conditions: showing and hiding questions

A condition attaches to one question and points at another question in the same survey. It says: only show this question if that other question’s answer passes a test. A question with no conditions is always shown.

Adding a condition

  1. Find the question you want to make conditional and click Conditions.

  2. Under Show this question if…, pick the question whose answer should be checked.

  3. Pick a Predicate.

  4. Enter a Value — text, a number, or a comma-separated list, depending on the predicate.

  5. Click Add Condition.

The predicates

  • Show this question if the answer equals the following text — an exact match against your value.

  • Show this question if the answer includes the following text — the answer must be one of a comma-separated list you supply. Enter it like Red,Blue,Green.

  • Show this question if the answer is greater than — a numeric comparison. The answer must be strictly greater than your value.

  • Show this question if the answer is less than — the same, strictly less than.

  • Ask this question for each number given in the answer — a repeating question. If the fan answered “3” to the question you point at, this question is asked three times.

Things to know

  • A question can’t depend on itself, and it can only depend on a question in the same survey. If a survey has only one question, add a second one first.

  • The question only appears once the fan has answered the question it depends on.

  • You can add more than one rule to the same question. When you do, all of them must pass for the question to appear. There’s no “any of these” option, so model alternatives as separate questions.

  • If a fan goes back and changes an answer, their answers to the questions that depend on it are cleared.

  • A question that has a condition doesn’t count toward earning section points (see below).

To remove a condition, open Conditions on the question. The window lists each rule with the question it follows, the condition and the value. Click Remove on the row.

What fans see

Fans must be signed in to take a survey. They open it from the survey’s Public Link, and then:

  1. Answer one question at a time.

  2. See a progress bar with your section’s Completion prompt.

  3. See your Section complete message at the end of each section that has one.

  4. Reach a “Survey complete” screen at the end.

  5. Can tap Back to review or change earlier answers.

How points are paid

  • Points are paid per section, not per survey.

  • A fan earns a section’s points once they’ve answered every question in that section that has no conditions.

  • A fan earns each section’s points once. They can earn them again only after a year has passed.

  • The points show in the member’s activity as “Answered [section title] survey.”

  • A section with no Completion points value pays nothing.

Reading the results

Per-question analytics. Below the questions table, Response Analytics (this section) breaks down what fans answered, for the section you’re viewing.

  • Choice, Dropdown and Star questions get a bar chart of the answer distribution, with each answer’s count and its share of the total.

  • Free-text questions show a response count only. There are too many different answers to chart usefully, so use the CSV export to read them.

Exporting raw responses. Click Export Responses (CSV) at the top of the survey page. The admin queues the export and tells you you’ll be notified when it’s ready. This is the way to get at free-text answers and at responses joined to the members who gave them.

Survey Answers Report. The same answers are also available in your Engagement reports, including the question, the answer, any feedback, time spent on the question, and the member’s details.

Deleting a survey

Click Delete on the survey list and confirm. This removes the survey, its sections and its questions. Turn the survey off instead if you might want it back.
